DRL Installation Guide
Installation instructions for Nuro Performance DRL kits. How long this takes and how much of the car comes apart depends almost entirely on which chassis you have and which modules your kit replaces. Work out those two things first, then follow the procedure that applies.
The headlight is not cut open
The DRL module is a separate finned aluminium unit with its own screws and connector. It is not sealed inside the headlight, so on the chassis covered here there is no oven step, no heat applied to the lens, and no butyl sealant to cut.
On some G series chassis the headlight has to be unbolted and slid forward, or a housing cover removed, to reach the rear module. That is still not the same as splitting the lens from the housing.

Time varies from about twenty minutes to most of an afternoon depending on the car. There is no single figure.
Start here: two things to establish
How many modules does your car have, and how many are in your kit?
Most BMW headlights covered here carry two DRL boards per side. One sits on top of the headlight and is reached from the engine bay. The second sits at the rear or outer corner and is reached through the wheel arch.
Kits are sold as two-piece sets (one per side) and four-piece sets (both per side). Count the boards in your box.
- Two boards means one location per side. If they are the top modules, no wheel comes off and the job is short
- Four boards means both locations per side, so the wheel arch work is unavoidable

G80 M3 and G82 M4: check your build year
On the LCI facelift cars, roughly 2024 to 2025 onward, several suppliers state that the DRL is integrated into a sealed headlight assembly and cannot be swapped as a module. Sources disagree on the exact cut-off year and on whether an LCI board swap is possible at all.
Our kits are intended for the pre-LCI cars. If your G80 or G82 is a 2024 build or later, contact us with your build date and a photograph of your headlight before ordering rather than after.
Match the connector to your headlight
DRL modules are made in different connector configurations, and the same chassis can be built with different headlights. Ordering for the wrong one is a common cause of returns.
Before ordering, confirm whether your car has Laser or LED headlights, and whether it is LCI or pre-LCI. Both are selectable on the product page. If the plug on the new module does not match the socket in the car, stop. Do not force it or modify it.
How long it takes
Add up the parts that apply to you
Published figures across the industry range from twenty minutes to four hours for what is nominally the same job. That spread is not marketing noise, it reflects genuinely different work. Build your own estimate from the parts below rather than trusting a single headline number.
- Top module, engine bay access, per side: roughly 10 to 15 minutes. Two screws, one connector, no dismantling
- Rear module, wheel arch access, per side: add roughly 45 to 60 minutes. Jacking, wheel off, liner out, restricted access, then all of it in reverse
- Boards-only kits, per board: add roughly 20 to 30 minutes for heating, separating, cleaning and bonding
- First attempt: add 50 percent. Everything above assumes you know where you are going
So an F80 with top-mounted modules is realistically under half an hour for both sides. A four-piece boards-only kit on a G80 with wheel arch access is realistically half a day. Both are correct for their car.
Kit types
DRL Boards + Heatsinks
Complete pre-assembled modules. The original is unplugged and unscrewed, and the new one goes in its place.
No adhesive work. Skip the boards-only section entirely.
DRL Boards only
The original heatsinks are retained and only the LED boards are replaced.
This adds separating the existing board from the heatsink, removing the factory thermal adhesive, and bonding the new board in the same position. See the boards-only section.
Factory headlights only
DRL boards and modules are made to fit original BMW headlight assemblies. Aftermarket and replica headlights use different internals and mounting points and are not supported.
Tools
For any DRL install
- T20 Torx driver for the module screws. A short offset or stubby Torx is worth having, as at least one screw on most cars has very little clearance
- Plastic trim removal tools
- Torch or headlamp. The working areas are dark
Only if the wheel comes off
- 17mm socket and breaker bar, plus your locking wheel nut key
- 8mm and 10mm sockets for the liner. Which one varies by chassis
- Floor jack, axle stands, wheel chocks
- Torque wrench for refitting the wheel
Only for boards-only kits
- Low heat source. A hair dryer is sufficient and safer than a heat gun
- Thin flat blade or plastic pry tool
- Isopropyl alcohol and a microfibre cloth
- Thermal paste or thermal adhesive, and 400 grit paper if the heatsink face needs it
Work on a cold car, ignition off, key out of range. Do one side at a time so the untouched side stays available as a reference.
F series procedure
F80 M3, F82 and F83 M4, 4 Series
This is the quickest version of the job. The modules sit on top of the headlights and are reached with the bonnet open. Nothing else comes off the car.
- Open the bonnet and locate the DRL module on top of the headlight.
- Remove the three T20 screws holding the module.
- Lift the module clear and disconnect its two connectors, pulling on the connector bodies rather than the wiring.
- Fit the new module, reconnect both plugs, and refit the three screws. Tighten until seated only.
- Test before closing up, then repeat on the other side.
F30 3 Series is not the same job
Despite being the same generation, the F30 is a considerably bigger task. Published procedures involve removing the front bumper, the wheel arch liner and undertray fasteners to reach the module.
Do not assume the F80 procedure above transfers to it. If you have an F30, contact us before starting.
G series procedure
Top module, from the engine bay
Do this first on any G series car. If your kit only has two boards and they are the top modules, this is the entire job.
- Open the bonnet and locate the finned aluminium heatsink on top of the headlight.
- Remove the two T20 screws.
- Rotate the heatsink slightly to reach the locking tab, press it, and free the module from the housing.
- Disconnect the connector by its body, then withdraw the module.
- Fit the replacement, applying thermal paste to the mating face unless it is pre-applied. Reconnect, refit the screws, and test.
Rear module, through the wheel arch
Only needed if your kit includes the second board per side. This is where the time goes.
- Secure the car. Chock the rear wheels, loosen the front wheel bolts on the ground, then jack the front and rest it on axle stands. Never work under a car held only by a jack.
- Remove the front wheel on the side you are working on. Turning the steering to full lock can improve access.
- Remove the wheel arch liner. It is held by a mix of bolts and push clips, in 8mm or 10mm depending on chassis. Use a trim tool on the clips and keep the fasteners in order, as lengths vary by position.
- Locate the rear module at the back or upper outer corner of the headlight housing, held by two T20 screws with a connector fitted.
- Disconnect the connector first, then remove the screws. The inner screw has very little clearance and is the reason a short offset Torx is worth owning.
- Fit the replacement and reconnect. On some chassis the headlight itself must be unbolted and eased forward to get a straight run at this module. If access is impossible without force, stop and contact us rather than levering the housing.
- Test both sides before reassembly, while access is still available.
- Reassemble. Liner, wheel, lower the car, then torque the wheel bolts. G8X is 140 Nm, 103 ft-lb. Confirm the figure for your own model.
Boards-only procedure
Separating and bonding the board
- Warm the rear of the heatsink to soften the factory thermal adhesive. The heatsink should be warm to the touch, not hot. Excessive heat damages the LEDs and can distort the housing.
- Separate the original board evenly. Work a thin blade into the joint and lift along its length rather than levering from one corner. Expect it to be firmly stuck. Twisting cracks the board.
- Clean the heatsink to bare metal with isopropyl alcohol and a microfibre cloth. A light pass with 400 grit is acceptable on stubborn residue.
- Confirm the surface is flat and clean. Residual adhesive holds the new board off the face, and a board not in full contact will run hot and fail early.
- Apply thermal paste or adhesive evenly. Thin and complete is correct. Thick or patchy reduces heat transfer.
- Fit the new board in the original position. Alignment affects both output and refitting.
- Allow adhesive to cure per its instructions before refitting the module.
Why thermal contact matters
The heatsink dissipates heat from the LED board. Transfer depends on metal to metal contact through a thin, even layer of compound.
Most early DRL failures trace back to poor bonding: residual adhesive, an excessive layer of paste, or a board sitting proud on one edge.
Boards supplied with heatsinks remove this step entirely.
After installation
Coding and warnings
No coding is required and no resistors or decoders are needed. Nothing is cut or soldered.
A temporary bulb monitoring message is possible on some cars immediately after fitting and normally clears by itself. A warning that persists across several drive cycles is not normal. Do not keep clearing it. Contact us.
Fault finding
If one side does not illuminate, the most common cause is a connector that has not fully latched. Disconnect and refit it firmly before assuming a component fault.
Flickering, or a colour difference between sides, points to the same thing or to a board not seated flat against its heatsink.
DRL colour and Australian regulations
White and yellow forward facing DRLs are generally accepted. Red and blue forward facing DRLs are not road legal in Australia and those kits are supplied for show and off road use only.
Regulations and enforcement vary between states. Confirm the requirements that apply in your state before road use.
If the installation does not match this guide
Module position and mounting differ between generations, facelifts and headlight types, and this guide cannot cover every combination in the range. Stop before applying force. Headlight housings, mounting tabs and connector looms are the components most commonly damaged during this job.
